2011 Papa Ali'i Song Contest Information

Friday, October 14, 2011

This year Moku ‘o Hawai‘i has selected “Waikîkî Hula” as this year’s contest song.  It was an appropriate song selection as it honors Prince Kuhio’s Waikiki home – Pualeilani.

In addition to the contest song, we invite all participating Moku to share a second selection (or medley) of their choice to honor their specific Moku.  In staying with the theme of Prince Kuhio and/or songs written for homes, we encourage songs written for:

  1. Homestead areas
  2. Beloved / famous homes
  3. Honored people / places

These songs should be written about places / people from within your Moku boundaries.

Waikīkī Hula

– Traditional

Source: www.huapala.org

This song was written for Pualeilani, the Waikiki home of Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole. It was given to Helen Ayat by her mother, a lady-in-waiting to Princess Kahanu, wife of Prince Kuhio.

He aloha `ia no a`o Waikîkî, eâ

Ka nehe o ke kai hâwanawana

Pa iho ka makani lawa mâlie, eâ
Ke `ala onaona o ka lîpoa

Kaulana kou inoa i nâ malihini, eâ
Ka`apuni kou nani puni ka honua

Huli aku nânâ ia Kaimana Hila, eâ
`Ike i ka nani a`o Honolulu

Ha`ina `ia mai ana ka puana, eâ
He aloha `ia no a`o Waikîkî

Beloved is Waikiki
The rustling of the whispering sea

The wind blows carrying softly

The sweet fragrance of seaweed

Your name is famous to visitors,
All your beauty known around the world

Turn and look at Diamond Head
See the beauty of Honolulu

The story is told
Beloved is Waikiki
